Adapting the Space

In my worship class we recently talked about how to adapt the sanctuary space creatively. To my joy, North Holland Reformed Church, where we attend, tried to do exactly that a few weeks later. 

Thomas G. Long, in his book Beyond the Worship Wars, talks about creatively adapting the space and environment for worship. This does not mean doing a rebuilding project, but rather taking what you have and adapting it creatively. 

There are many biblical images of worship space:

• Tent 
• Tabernacle 
• Communicates the transient nature of worship – God is on the move 
• Temple 
• Communicates a sense of awe and wonder, mystery and also stability 
• The House 
• Gathering around the table – intimacy and community

Thinking about space: 

Spaces which make up our worship space include...

• Gathering Space (i.e. Narthex) 
• Well-marked and welcoming 
• Funnel us from all the places we come in life to our one unified idea of worship 
• Movement Space 
• In the front or centre – where the attention is focused 
• Congregational Space 
• Where the congregation is 
• Choir Space 
• Dual function:
• Worship leaders
• Part of the congregation 
• Altar/Table Space, Baptismal Space, Lectern/Pulpit Space 
• As close to the congregation as appropriate
